The School for Music Vocations

The SMV (School for Music Vocations), in Creston, Iowa, is based out of Southwestern Community College.  It is the only 2-year vocational music program in the United States, earning students an Associate's Degree in Professional Music.

The SMV REal Group Festival

The School for Music Vocations will be the host for the Second Annual SMV REAL GROUP FESTIVAL, the first festival in the United States built around one of the world's most popular a cappella vocal ensembles.  If you are considering a visit to The School for Music Vocations, you might consider the first weekend of April.  If you direct a vocal ensemble, you and your ensemble are invited to join us on April 5-6, 2019 for our TWO-DAY non-competitive festival.  The festival is designed for VOCAL JAZZ, A CAPPELLA, and MADRIGAL/CHAMBER CHOIRS, and features two FRIDAY evening concerts where ensembles will sing a song along with The Real Group!

The festival sports a fresh format.  Ensembles begin with a lengthy FORTY-minute clinic with a member of The Real Group, paired with one of our (non-Scandinavian) SMV Faculty members.  Following the clinic, ensembles then perform back-to-back for each other at the end of the morning session, and at the end of the afternoon session – receiving taped or written comments from our SMV vocal faculty.

The festival experience also includes hands-on master classes in topics such as vocal improvisation, circle-singing, solo jazz singing, and nurturing the artistic soul.  You can also count on a supportive and non-competitive environment, recordings of your group’s performance and on-stage clinic, photos of the festival, and more!
